If your dog loves the water, chances are summer is their favorite time of the year! Whether frolicking in a pool, lake or ocean, Assisi Animal Health discusses four things dog owners should be aware of when enjoying summer fun with your dog.

1.   Protect their skin. Skin cancer is prevalent in dogs, and their fur does not offer complete protection. It is important to apply a pet-friendly sunscreen every three to four hours to exposed delicate areas like their bellies and tip of the nose and ears—as well as any parts of the body where the fur is thinner.

2.   Use a lifejacket. Put a life vest on your dog to help him or her stay afloat—and to enhance visibility to other swimmers and boaters.  The vest also makes an emergency rescue easier. There are a number of dog life vests on the market. Have him or her practice wearing it around the house or in the yard so they doesn't resist wearing it when you are on the water.

3.   Be body-of-water wary. Before going to the beach, check on the currents and riptides.  And remember not all dogs are good swimmers!  A dog can be pulled under or swept out to sea very quickly if you are not vigilant. Similarly, in a lake, a dog can step into a sinkhole and may need assistance to swim to an area where he or she can touch the bottom. Avoid any lakes or ponds with blue-green algae, as it can produce a dangerous toxin that can make your dog sick and inflame tender skin.

4.   Check pool chemicals. While it might be fun to go for a swim with your dog, the chlorine not only might irritate his or her skin, it can also upset the stomach. Make sure you rinse your dog off with fresh water immediately after swimming, and do not let him or her drink from the pool.
